HUMAN VOICE 2

1. The human voice

How are guitar strings and the human voice similar?  Both rely on vibrations to make sound.

Your Instrument

What is your favorite song? To sing along to your favorite song or just say hello to friends you have to use your voice. But what exactly is a voice and where does it come from?
Just like a guitar or violin uses vibrating, or quickly moving, strings to make music, humans use vibrating body parts to make sounds.

Larynx

Take a deep breath in. You just filled your lungs with air. As you breath out, that air travels back up your windpipe, also called the trachea, the passageway in your throat for air.
At the top of your trachea is a box-shaped area called the larynx. The larynx is nicknamed the voice box because it holds the body parts that help us speak. So you could say the larynx is the source of your voice.
Have you ever noticed the small bump on the front part of your throat below your chin? That is your larynx.

Vocal Cords

Stretched across the inside of the larynx are two very thin bands of muscle called vocal cords. When we breath in, the vocal cords open to let air pass through the larynx, into the trachea, and down to the lungs.
The vocal folds are open when we breath in and closed when we want to speak.
null
When we breath out and want to talk, the vocal cords close. Air from the lungs trying to pass by the closed vocal cords causes them to vibrate, which makes sound. Hum a little bit of your favorite song and touch your larynx.
Can you feel the vibrations?

The larynx, or voice box, is located in the throat just above the trachea.

The human voice consists of sound made by  using the vocal chords for talking, singing, laughing, crying, screaming, etc. Generally speaking, the voice can be subdivided into 3 parts;
1-(Respiratory system) The  breathing, : Lungs, trachea, diaphragm, nose, mouth.

2-(Phonator System) :The vocal chords , the larynx  lips, tongue, teeth.

3-(Resonator system) :nose, palate, soft palate chest or rib cage ,facial cavity ,cranial cavity

The lungs must produce enough airflow to vibrate vocal  cords. The vocal chords are the vibrators that produce the fine pitch and tone.

The articulators( tongue,palate,cheek,lips.....)  articulate   the sound.

Finally, the resonators  amplify and intensify the sound

The vocal chords, together with the articulators and the resonators, are capable of producing a lot of sounds.
The tone of voice may be modulated to suggest emotions such as anger, surprise, or happiness. Singers use the human voice as an instrument for creating music.

Vocal Ranges:

A typical choral arrangement divides women into higher and lower voices and men into higher or lower voices too.
The four main vocal ranges are:

-Soprano:
A high female (or young boy’s) voice.

-Alto :
A low female (or young boy’s) voice

-Tenor :
 A high (adult) male voice

-Bass :
A low (adult) male voice

There   are   some   ranges   between   the   main ones:

-Mezzo-soprano :
In between soprano and alto

-Contralto :

Contralto and alto originally referred to the same voice. But some people today use  “contralto” to refer to a female voice that is even lower than a typical alto.

-Countertenor :
A male voice that is unusually high, light, and agile, even for a tenor.

-Baritone :
A male voice that falls in between tenor and bass.

3. Choral music

A choir, chorale, or chorus is a musical ensemble of singers. Choral Music, therefore, is the music written specifically for a choir to perform. Choirs are often led by a conductor or choirmaster and can be categorized by the voices:

Mixed choirs (i.e., with male and female voices). This is perhaps the most common type, usually consisting of soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices, often abbreviated as SATB.

Male choirs, with the same SATB voicing as mixed choirs, but with boys singing the upper part (often called treble or boy soprano) and men singing alto (in falsetto), also known as countertenor. This format is typical of British cathedral choirs.

Female choirs, usually consisting of soprano and alto voices, two parts in each.

Children's choirs, This includes boys’ choirs.

MUSICAL GENRE

El paso del cine mudo al sonoro fue  fascinante. Superponiendo baile y música se inventaría un nuevo género : el musical, en el que se canta y baila atrapando al espectador.

The passage from silent to sound films was fascinating. Overlaying dance and music a new genre would be invented: the musical, in which one sings and dances by hooking the spectator.

Let's watch this documentary about the musical genre.

PLAY OPERA WITH THE RECORDER.HAENDEL,WAGNER, MOZART

1-Le't play this music from Rinaldo the Haendel's Opera. Farinelli , il castrato used to sing it.

Click the links:there are 2 versions.

http://susjegc.wix.com/lascia-ch-io

2-Let's play WeddingMarch from Wagner's opera Lohengrin:

TALKING ABOUT OPERA-TASK

TASK :

Imagine - last week, you were to watch an opera performance with your teacher.
What opera did you see? Choose one Opera ,  then search for information about your opera and make up an amazing story! 150 words

Useful vocabulary:
- Costume - a set of clothes in a style typical of a particular country or historical period

- Stage - a platform on which actors, entertainers, or speakers perform.

- Recitative  Speech like singing. The singer semi chants the words, like free rhythm of speech.

- Aria  A big song where the singer reveals her feelings and shows of her voice.

- Chorus /choir  A fairly large company of singers who perform together, usually in parts

- Duet - A composition to be performed by two musicians

- Ensemble - A group of musicians that perform as a unit

- Perform - it is the realization of a composition or in other words to "play" music with one or more musicians.

Here you have the example of Maria , an student:

María
Two weeks ago my music teacher said to as : we are going to see an opera . I thought that it was going to be very boring. Before go to the opera I decided to read the libretto to have more information about the opera that we were going to see. The opera was Agrippina by George Fridedrich Händel. The libretto was written by Vincenzo Grimani. The opera was premiered at the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo Venice the 26 of december. Agrippina is an opera seria in three acts the opera tells the story of Agrippina, the mother of Nero.

The day of the excursion ,the teacher said to us that this opera was one of the best operas of Handel. When we arrived to the theatre was not open so we had to wait. Then my music teacher told us something more about the opera. When finally we entered to the theater the stage was amazing.

The opera began . In the first act Agrippina though that her husband was died and she tried to secure the throne for Nero her son by a previous marriage. But really her husband wasn't died because Otho saved him.And and the rest didn't know it because the characters were singing in a strange language.
The second act was very boring because I didn't understand it but the costumes were very nice .When the second act finished my teacher said that the opera was recitative.
The third act started. We were very boring but was the last act and we saw it. In this act Claudius announces that Nero and Poppaea will marry, and that Otho shall have the throne. No one is satisfied with this arrangement, as their desires have all changed, so Claudius in a spirit of reconciliation reverses his judgement, giving Poppaea to Otho and the throne to Nero. He then summons the goddess Juno, who descends to pronounce a general blessing .

The opera finished . It wasn't as bad as we thought .Finally we had a good time seeing the opera of Händel.
