Music History

Rock and Roll is a style of music that began in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It became very popular and is still popular today. Some of the most famous Rock and Roll bands are: The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Metallica, U2, Radiohead, Queen, Kiss, and of course, Elvis Presley!
Rock and Roll would have never existed had it not been for a very bad part of our history......
Slavery.
Here’s the story: In the 1600 in the United States (and in Canada), there were huge farms
and the farmers needed help to take care of the crops and animals. Some people went to
Africa to kidnap African people and brought them to North America to sell them as slaves.
(Slavery was abolished in 1865 in the US and in 1833 in Canada - thank goodness!)
These African people could not bring anything with them from home except their language
and their music. During the long, hard days working on the farms, they used to sing to keep
up their spirits. That is when the music of Africa and the music of North America mixed
together and started the beginning of the journey of the creation of Rock and Roll.
- 1600s: Slavery started in North America
- Soon after, the music of Africa and North America mix together.
- Some of the styles of music that came out of this mix are: Gospel, Blues, Jazz,
Boogie Woogie and Rhythm and Blues.

- The Blues was a musical style that was slow and melancholy (sad)

- In the 1950s, some musicians took the Blues and made the tempo go faster.
They added a drum beat and some electric guitars and Rock and Roll was born!

- Rock and Roll became popular very quickly, in part because it had a great beat  and also because of the radio, records, and television.

- Some famous early Rock and Roll musicians were: Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley!
- Before electricity, you could not have very big concerts because you could not  hear the music from far. A group of 4 musicians playing acoustic guitars, a small snare drum and singing without microphones could be heard by a maximum of 200 people. Then, with electric guitars and amplifiers as well as microphones, all of a sudden it was so loud that they needed a full drum set. Also, it meant that they could perform concerts for thousands of people!

- In the 1970s, there were the Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin,
the Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen and many, many more.

- Rock and Roll has influenced Grunge, Rap, Hiphop, Pop, Punk, Heavy Metal and many more styles of music we hear today.

MUSICA PARA EL CONFINAMIENTO

How are you doing? Burdened with homework? Bored? Here goes today's musical dose.

This is the youtube channel STAY HOMAS that 3 friends from Barcelona have who post a neww song every day of confinement. They have a good time and they sing really well. I leave you the song Gotta be patient, which talks about the desire we all have to go out for a walk and see friends.

¿Cómo vais?  ¿Resistiendo? ¿Agobiados con las tareas? ¿Aburridos?

Listening: GRIEG

In class we were playing "Morning"( La mañana) but now  we will hear another fragment of the Peer Gynt " suite by the Norwegian composer E.GRIEG . This is " In the hall of the Mountain King ".
In the cave of the king of the mountain   (or in the palace of the king of the mountain) is a fragment of the orchestral music Peer Gynt, Opus 23, composed by Edvard Grieg for the play by Henrik Ibsen  of the same title, which was premiered in Oslo on February 24, 1876. Although the execution of the complete fragment lasts only two minutes, it has achieved the category of icon in popular culture and its music is well known.
Peer Gynt , a fantastic story written in verse by Ibsen, narrates the adventures of the audacious Peer. At one point in the work, Peer went to the dominions of the King of the Mountain, a king of trolls and gnomes that lives in the depths of the earth (the term Hall, in Norwegian, can be translated more literally as "Great room"). Peer has seduced the daughter of the king and he forces him to marry her with all the consequences. Before the refusal of Peer, who wants to flee, the king orders that they persecute him.

Are we listening ???

¿Estamos escuchando?
